"Towards Sustainable Peace and Democracy in Yemen" Conference Booklet
After nearly eight years of a devastating war that resulted in over half a million casualties and injuries, as well as widespread suffering, the Yemeni peace efforts gained significant international momentum, particularly following the ceasefire agreed upon by Yemeni conflict parties in April 2022. This ceasefire included a cessation of hostilities and other provisions.
Recognizing the importance of defining the Yemeni crisis for the international community and understanding the true aspirations of the Yemeni people for peace, separate from the interests of local and regional conflicting parties, the conference aimed to explore the necessary steps and practices to prevent a new cycle of conflict. Accordingly, the conference's key findings emphasized that genuine peace in Yemen begins with upholding the unity, republican system, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and safety of Yemen. This also entails respecting Yemeni sovereignty, withdrawing foreign forces, and rejecting external interference in Yemeni affairs.
The conference called on all parties to engage in a project for a civil federal democratic state, as outlined in the outcomes of the National Dialogue. Furthermore, it urged the Houthi group to align with the aspirations of the Yemeni people, disarm the militia, establish new Yemeni leadership for a specified transitional period, and work towards a Yemen governed by the rule of law, with human rights, justice, and equality as its foundation.
