In a continued effort to support education and cultural access for children in conflict-affected areas, Tawakkol Karman Foundation has launched a new initiative called Dreams on Screen in Marib, northeast Yemen. The project, part of the Haith Al-Insan program, introduces a mobile cinema experience designed to offer children meaningful and educational films in a safe and welcoming environment.
The initiative organizes mobile screenings in areas where children gather, complementing the foundation’s earlier efforts to promote literacy through a mobile library. Both projects aim to fill the gap in educational and cultural resources in underserved communities.
Anas Al-Ahmadi, a young boy displaced from Sana’a to Marib, shared, “Before we fled, our school used to have sessions to watch useful documentaries, but here we don’t have anything like that. We really miss those activities.”
Majed Al-Mawsai, head of the Youth and Sports Office in Marib, stressed the importance of creating safe spaces for children. “I’m always looking for a secure environment for my son, away from negative influences. If something like a mobile cinema is available, I would feel much more at ease,” he said.
To bring this vision to life, the foundation purchased a mid-sized bus and converted it into a mobile cinema called Belqees Cinema for Children. The bus is fully equipped with screening technology and age-appropriate educational films.
Children expressed immense joy at the experience, saying it gave them a chance to watch documentaries and meaningful stories suited to their age in a safe space—without their families having to worry. They thanked Tawakkol Karman Foundation and expressed hope that the initiative would continue and reach more areas.
The project also offers psychosocial support by stimulating imagination and broadening horizons through visual storytelling. The mobile cinema has proven to be an effective tool for bringing happiness to children while helping them engage with cultural and educational content.
This initiative is part of Tawakkol Karman Foundation’s ongoing commitment to uplifting communities affected by conflict and economic hardship, with a particular focus on expanding educational and cultural opportunities for children living under exceptional circumstances.
