On Sunday, November 19, 2023, Tawakkol Karman Foundation announced the commencement of a project to construct a primary and secondary school for the deaf in Taiz governorate, southwest Yemen. The estimated cost of the project is 270 million Yemeni rials, funded by the foundation, following the signing of the construction contract with the Education Office in the governorate.
Following the contract signing, Tawakkol Karman Foundation, under the guidance of Taiz Governor, Nabil Shamsan, took possession of the designated land for the school located in the Qasim Hill area on the Fortieth Street in the Al-Mudhaffar district of Taiz province. The handover ceremony was attended by the representative of the Education Office in Taiz, Bjash Al-Makhlafi, and the Director General of Technical Affairs in the governorate, Engineer Bashir Al-Aleemi.
This project is distinctive in Taiz and symbolizes a beacon of hope and a future for the deaf community, which has been significantly affected during the years of war, resulting in many of them being deprived of education.
The implementation of the school project is a response from Tawakkol Karman Foundation to numerous appeals from the families of the deaf and mute community, granting them their educational rights that cater to their specific needs.
It is worth noting that educational projects for all segments of society are at the forefront of Tawakkol Karman Foundation's concerns and developmental programs, acknowledging that education is the foundation for building nations and fostering their development.
