Tawakkol Karman Foundation Launches Emergency Aid Campaign for the Displaced of Al Hudaydah (Taiz and Aden, Yemen)
Al Hudaydah governorate, located on the Red Sea coast in western Yemen, has the highest poverty rate in Yemen, making its residents vulnerable to starvation. About 62% of the city's residents were farmers, and Fishermen lost their primary sources of income due to the outbreak of war in 2015. The risk of famine is increasing in the governorate, and it has recorded the highest Acute malnutrition rates in the country.
The escalation of military operations to control the port of Al Hudaydah exacerbates the food crisis and spread famine to 82% of its population. And there are more than 3 million people in the region in need of food and medicine. Currently, most of the population survives on bread and water and on food rations that are provided by humanitarian organizations. Although the fighting is hampering the ability of humanitarian organizations to reach the people most in need of humanitarian assistance.
Before the war, the governate population depended on daily income to secure their living needs but with the escalation of fighting, approximately 250,000 cases were displaced, were forced to leave their homes and possessions, and become homeless in various areas in the cities of Taiz, Aden, and others, and their lives turned into a tragedy due to the lack of food and shelter, as they are facing severe insecurity and the absence of basic needs, most of them live with host families or in rented accommodation, while others live in temporary camps.
The reality of the displacement that led to their lives made them in dire need of relief, especially considering their inability to return to their areas due to the ongoing war, in addition to the unaffordable prices of basic food commodities that exceed their purchasing power.
TKF launched two relief campaigns; the first one provided food baskets to 450 families, displaced from Al Hudaydah to Asafra, Bir Basha, Al-Hasib, Al-Manakh, Jamal, and Al-Darbeh areas in the city of Taiz. While the second campaign covered 400 families who fled for their life to Aden to escalate the fighting near their homes in Al Hudaydah. The food baskets cost 6.6 million Yemeni riyals and were distributed in areas of Al-Koud, Al-Othmani, Al-Mahariq, Asilah, Al-Mamdara, Sheikh Othman, and Aden.
Mrs. Misk Al-Junaid, the executive director of the foundation, mentioned that the campaign came as an urgent response to the humanitarian situation of the displaced people of Al Hudaydah city and stated that TKF will carry out two other campaigns to help the displaced in Aden and Sana'a Solidarity and advocacy for the oppressed and those affected by wars and disasters are among the most prominent values espoused by TKF and one of its main founding objectives which are to help people in areas of conflict and war.
