Tawakkol Karman Foundation Opens Physiotherapy Center (Taiz, Yemen)
Taiz is Yemen's third most populous governorate that became a hotbed of violence a few weeks after the outbreak of the conflict in Yemen in 2015. Since then, hardly a day goes by without shelling, bullets, missile attacks, and or airstrikes. The health facilities of the city are repeatedly attacked with missiles, which led to a partial or complete suspension of many of these facilities, while others are on the verge of collapse because of medicine, staff, and funding shortages.
The almost two-year war resulted in thousands of wounded and injured people suffering from moderate or minor injuries and they are not receiving the medical help needed due to the lack of rehabilitation programs and treatment centers in the city. In many cases, injuries turn into permanent disabilities, and the absence of treatment extends to prevent patients from sustaining and providing for themselves and their families. Treatable injuries are disrupting their productivity for the rest of their life.
To eliminate the suffering of the people of Taiz, TKF established Care Center with a cost of more than 20 million Yemeni riyals, with the intention to provide physiotherapy and rehabilitation services to the wounded. The center is equipped with the necessary tools and medical machines that enable doctors and specialists to rehabilitate and treat disabilities and prevent them from turning into permanent disabilities in the future due to a lack of Necessary medical services.
Mrs. Misk Al-Junaid, the executive director of the foundation, stated that the center is a prelude to other projects that the TKF plans to implement in the future to meet its pursuits in supporting and improving the health sector in Yemen and in caring for the war-wounded. Additionally, Al-Junaid stated that the center created will be funded fully by TKF, and managed by the Care Foundation (CA) Which is active in supporting the Families of Martyrs and Wounded.
Nabil Jamal, the director of the " Care " foundation stated that the establishment of the CARE center came at a time of an urgent humanitarian need for help for the war-wounded. Jamal thanked the TKF for putting this project into practice within its scope of activities aimed at alleviating the suffering of the people.
The development of the health sector is one of the projects that TKF is currently working on within the development program, which includes various sectors, and it hopes that the center will accomplish its goals to alleviate the suffering of people and provide treatment to the injured. It also calls on the parties to the conflict to respect international law and spare health and civilian facilities from the dangers of destruction.
