Tawakkol Karman Foundation Launches Humanitarian Aid Campaign for Yemen
More than half of the population in Yemen, which is about 25 million, faces a food crisis caused by the economic downturn. According to recent international reports, unemployment rates reached 80%, and the rise in food prices exceeded the purchasing power of the people, as prices rose by 150%, compared to before the war broke out.
Most of the population lives in areas affected by the war that erupted in the country two years ago, and others live in areas where the siege imposed on the population hindered access to food. The military operations escalated between the parties to the conflict, indifference to the humanitarian burden. The division of areas between the parties to the conflict restricted the access of humanitarian organizations to the areas most affected by the war. As a result, residents in those areas require urgent humanitarian assistance to meet their basic food needs.
In response to the urgent humanitarian aid, TKF launched a campaign targeting multiple areas in Yemen. The first phase took place in the “Namat Rassam” school in the governorate of Taiz. Government officials, representatives of organizations, and charities attended the campaign, where the foundation planned to distribute five thousand food baskets that cover all the villages of the “Al-Silwu” district in Taiz. Moreover, the campaign aimed to continue to provide in the following phases what is to reach other Yemeni regions through mechanisms that ensure that the aid reaches needy families.
TKF executive director, Mrs. Misk Al-Junaid, mentioned that the campaign came within the framework of the emergency humanitarian aid program that TKF is leading in areas of conflicts and wars. It targets Yemen in the current period and is expected to cover all areas that suffer from food security problems in the future.
