Tawakkol Karman Foundation has supported Yusra Abdu, a mother of five from Sheikh Othman district in Aden, by providing her with a stable source of income after years of selling newspapers on the street.
For over thirteen years, Yusra has stood in the same spot selling daily newspapers to provide for her children. “This street has been my workplace,” she said, explaining how she has struggled to meet her family's needs.
With fewer people reading print newspapers and most turning to their phones for news, her earnings dwindled. At one point, a kind donor helped her set up a small kiosk to shield her from the sun while she worked, but it was removed just two years later during a government campaign to clear what authorities claimed were unlicensed stalls—forcing her back onto the street.
"Selling newspapers is no longer enough," Yusra added. "Sometimes I have to collect empty plastic bottles and cans from the streets just to make a little money to support my family."
Her only dream now is a better future for her children. With her eldest daughter finishing high school, she hoped to one day have a small business to help provide for their education and daily needs.
In response, Tawakkol Karman Foundation stepped in through its third season of the Haith Al-Insan program, aired on Belqees TV, and helped Yusra start her own business. The foundation set up a stationery store, supplying school supplies and adding groceries to expand her income potential.
This initiative gave Yusra a new beginning—away from the harsh sun and street corners—offering her a dignified livelihood and a renewed sense of hope for her family’s future.
