Tawakkol Karman Foundation established a small business for a woman who supports her children by selling newspapers in Sheikh Othman district, Aden governorate.

Yusra Abdo says that for thirteen years she has been selling daily newspapers on the street that she considers her workplace for her needs and her five children.

She adds that she does not make much money selling newspapers because of the lack of readers and their dependence on mobile phones to browse the news.

Yusra had obtained from a philanthropist a kiosk in which she is selling newspapers and protecting herself from the sun’s heat, but her joy lasted only two years as it was removed with many other kiosks by the authorities during a campaign to remove the kiosks, they said were illegal, so Yusra returned to work again in the street.

She added that working selling newspapers is no longer enough, so she is sometimes forced to work harder, by collecting water bottles and empty plastic cans from the streets, then selling them to find enough to support her family.

Yusra says that she no longer dreams of anything other than the future of her children. She is now waiting for her eldest daughter to complete her secondary school education and hopes that she will have a small business that will help her provide for the needs and education of her children.

Tawakkol Karman Foundation intervened to rescue the persevering woman Yusra from working on the sidewalks and funded her to establish a library to sell school supplies, and to increase her income, she added foodstuffs to the shop.
