Amid the ongoing turmoil in Yemen, Muthanna, a displaced teacher from Raymah Governorate, has found a beacon of hope through a new opportunity in Taiz. Forced to flee his hometown due to pressure from the Houthi militia and faced with the economic strain of unpaid salaries, Muthanna’s story reflects the resilience of individuals caught in the country’s humanitarian crisis.
Muthanna’s journey began as a teacher in a rural school in Raymah’s Al-Jabin District. When his sole source of income—a teacher’s salary—was cut off, he was left with no choice but to leave his home, seeking both safety and livelihood opportunities in Taiz. "After losing our only source of income, I was compelled to move to Taiz, hoping to find a way to support my family and ensure my children could continue their education," Muthanna shared.
Initially, he took up street vending in Taiz, selling goods to scrape together an income. Yet, even as he navigated the challenges of displacement, Muthanna remained committed to his passion for education, volunteering as a teacher at a local school in Taiz. "Muthanna is one of the most dedicated and competent educators we’ve had," said Mohammed Rawah, an administrator at Al-Nahda School. "Despite his circumstances, he saw teaching as a national duty."
Recognizing his unwavering commitment, Tawakkol Karman Foundation stepped in to support Muthanna through its "Haith Al-Insan" program. The foundation helped him establish a small business, providing a shop in Taiz equipped with all the essentials, including shelving, decorations, and an inventory of nuts and raisins.
For Muthanna, this new venture has been transformative. "I’m overjoyed to finally have a stable livelihood that allows me to support my family without the strain of selling on the streets," he expressed.
The shop initiative is part of a broader series of development projects under Tawakkol Karman Foundation’s "Haith Al-Insan" program. Featured on Belqees TV during Ramadan, these projects aim to empower displaced and marginalized individuals across Yemen.
Muthanna’s story is a testament to the power of community-driven support and resilience in the face of adversity—a reminder that even amid Yemen’s enduring challenges, there are glimmers of hope.
