Tawakkol Karman Foundation has launched productive and service-oriented projects for the most vulnerable, marginalized, and impoverished women in Al-Mahra governorate. These projects aim to empower them to cope with the harsh realities of life after years of war and living in extreme poverty, without adequate work opportunities.
Afrah Hassan, a housewife who lost her husband and one of her six children, including a child with a chronic illness, works in the morning for a salary of no more than thirty thousand riyals. In the evenings, she sells potatoes outside her small home to meet her children's educational needs and basic food requirements.
Afrah has a strong will to work and possesses skills in women's hairstyling. Based on her belonging to the most vulnerable groups, which is a criterion for Tawakkol Karman Foundation’s projects in Al-Mahra, the foundation decided to enable Afrah to start her own business and support her family.
Afrah says, "My dream is to raise my children correctly, see them complete their education, and face the difficult circumstances of life."
Tears welled up in Afrah’s eyes when she was informed of the foundation's decision to create a business for her.
The project provided Afrah with a salon, rented it, and renovated it with electricity and decor that meets the requirements for women's services. It was fully equipped with all the necessary tools for a salon, allowing Afrah to offer high-quality bridal and special occasion hairstyling services in Al-Mahra.
Afrah says, "I never expected my dream to come true. I thank God and the Tawakkol Karman Foundation for this support. I encourage women not to give up, to continue working, and to trust in themselves, as sustenance comes from God."
This project is part of the initiatives executed by Tawakkol Karman Foundation through the "Haith Al-Insan" program, which is broadcast on Belqees channel during Ramadan.
