Tawakkol Karman Foundation implemented a project to save farms in Wadi Hadramout from agricultural insects and pests, and from water shortages in the farms that depend on traditional irrigation, after years of a pandemic that afflicted the farms in Tarem, Wadi Hadramout.
One of the locals says, "Agriculture represents an identity for the residents of the valley. Most of the residents of Wadi Hadramout work in agriculture."
Another farmer says: Ten years ago, insect and agricultural pests attacked palm (date) trees, and we launched a spraying campaign to no avail. In the past, the state used to help with spraying campaigns, but now no such campaigns.”
Pests attacked palm (date) farms in Tarem. The son of a farmer whose farms were damaged says: my father used to work on this farm. I took over after him, but the farm dried up because of insects, and the water in it was scarce. I have a large family, and I cannot take care of the farm and the family at the same time, I don’t know! To care for the family or the farm."
An elderly farmer said: ``We dug a well instead of the first one that dried up, but we faced problems, and for years we have been suffering from many problems, especially the pests.”
The son of a farmer says, "we agreed with a company to treat the scourge on a debt basis, but to no avail, and the debt is still unpaid, especially with the outrageously high prices, especially the high fuel prices."
Tawakkol Karman Foundation provided support for two neighboring farms in Tarem with a modern drip irrigation system and hired an agricultural engineer to supervise the process of fertilizing the land.
With the support of Tawakkol Foundation, the owners of the two farms planted vegetables, due to their low costs and the speed of their harvest and sale in the market.
Within only two months of the Foundation’s intervention, the products of the two farms were being sold in Hadramout markets.
One of the farmers said: "The idea of drip irrigation is good, which helped in production and reduced costs, especially in terms of the amount of water."
Another farmer said: this project is beyond my dream. This saved the farm. We thank God. We thank the Foundation, and may God reward them with goodness. We thank the team of Haith Al-Insan program, which is broadcasted by Belqees channel during the month of Ramadan, for this work.
