Karman to Join "Democratic Era in the Arab World" in Sarajevo
Renowned human rights activist and Nobel laureate Tawakkol Karman is set to participate in the upcoming conference titled "Democratic Era in the Arab World: Roadmap to Democracy," scheduled for October 19-20, 2024, in Sarajevo, Bosnia.
The event will be inaugurated by former Tunisian President and current Head of the Arab Council, Dr. Moncef Marzouki.
Karman will deliver a keynote speech addressing the pressing challenges facing the Arab world, including the decline of democratic values and the rise of authoritarianism. Her insights are expected to contribute to the formulation of a comprehensive democratic charter aimed at guiding Arab societies toward sustainable democratic systems that prioritize social justice and individual freedoms.
The conference will bring together prominent Arab thinkers, politicians, and activists to foster dialogue and coordinate efforts in response to the region's political and economic crises, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Karman’s participation underscores the importance of collective action in confronting these challenges and revitalizing democratic ideals across the Arab world.
The conference has several key objectives, including drafting an Arab Democratic Charter that outlines the principles of democracy in the region, redefining democracy as a national liberation issue, proposing economic and social policies that balance freedom and justice, and activating the Arab Democrats Network to enhance democratic cooperation.
As the conference unfolds, attendees will engage in meaningful discussions aimed at developing strategies for achieving true democracy in the region, making this event a critical platform for change in the Arab landscape.
