Social change under political tyranny is not possible, says Nobel laureate at Penn
On Thursday, September 30, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights activist Tawakkol Karman gave a lecture entitled “Social Change and the Global Middle East”, held by the Andrea Mitchell Center for The Study of Democracy at the University of Pennsylvania.
Tawakkol Karman explained that "change" is the key word in the Arab region and the Middle East, stressing that social change is impossible under the political tyranny that sees in underdevelopment a guarantee for its survival.
“Forty years of tyranny led to a catastrophic failure in development and the economy and in various aspects of life, including the situation of women and human rights, which has reached a worse situation than it was at the beginning of our countries’ independence from colonialism.”
