Tawakkol Karman Foundation Provides Salt Workers with Packaging Factory and Safety Tools (Hadramout, Yemen)
The Tawakkol Karman Foundation provided women in Hadramout who work in salt extraction with a packaging factory and safety tools to protect them from the risks they are exposed to during work. Hundreds of women in the Mayfaa area of Mukalla district used to gather every morning waiting for large trucks to take them to the work area for the extraction of salt. They would work with their hands because they did not have access to safety tools.
Om Omar, a worker in the extraction of salt, said that once she and her companions return home every evening, their hands and feet are so cracked that many cannot return to work the next day. In addition, the workers have developed back injuries and pain due to them having to sit in long positions all day while working in the sun. One of the workers fell into a hole while trying to collect salt with her hands, and had it not been for quickly rescuing her, her life would have been in danger, according to Umm Omar.
The Tawakkol Karman Foundation provided a machine for grinding and distributing salt in plastic bags, a water tank for the machine, packaging devices, an electric generator, and containers for drinking water. It also built a shelter for female workers collecting salt, and provided umbrellas, tools for transporting salt, and safety tools for female workers.
The project to implement this factory for working women in Hadramout comes within the series of works of Tawakkul Karman Foundation Development Program "Haith Al-Insan" for the fourth season, which was presented by Belqees channel during the month of Ramadan of 2022.
Afrah Hassan has a strong will towards work, and she has skills in women's hairdressing, and based on being among the poorest groups as a criterion for Tawakkol Foundation in this project in Al-Mahra Governorate, in eastern Yemen, the Foundation decided to empower Afrah with her enterprise that would enable her to work and take care of her family.
Afrah says: “My dream is to raise my children in the right way, to complete their education, and to be able to face the difficult circumstances of life.”
Tears fell from Afrah's eyes the moment she was informed of the Foundation's decision to establish her income generating project.
The foundation provided Afrah with a rented hairdressing shop, redesigning it and renovating it with electricity and decoration to suit the requirements of women's work, and furnishing it with all hairdressing tools to enable Afrah to provide the finest bridal hairdressing services and wedding events in Al-Mahra.
Afrah says: I did not expect my dream to come true, I thank God for that, and I thank Tawakkol Karman Foundation for this support, and I urge women not to give up and continue to work and trust themselves until the sustenance comes from Allah.
This project comes within the projects implemented by Tawakkol Karman Foundation through “Haith Al-Insan” program, which is shown by Belqees TV Channel during Ramadan.
