Haven for Humanity is a program of different sectors and aims that provide aid to the populations most affected by war; the first part of which was implemented during Ramadan 2019.

After Decades … Abdel-Khaleq Village Bids Farewell to Thirst

Haven for Humanity quenches the thirst of the village of Abdel-Khaleq in the Directorate of Ja’ar. In the village which suffers from drought, thirst remains an unbearable obsession for its people. When the pump stumble, the life stops. At the same time, people can’t afford buying water tanks. Haven for Humanity team reached out to this issue and a project to deliver water to the village was completed in cooperation with local administration, with the financial support of Tawakkol Karman Foundation. Our hearts got rejoiced when we saw the smiles of children, women and the elderly, after they conquered their thirst.

Tammy… the Pioneer of Pastries in Tarim

From Tarim, hope is born, and struggle does flourishe at the hands of Yemeni women who created from the fragility of life an amazing presence. Tammy, the heroine of the dream, is a Hadrami woman who didn’t surrender to the restrictions of social customs that often lacks justice and logic. When she found herself without a breadwinner who would care for them, she said with confidence, I will provide for myself and my family and started making a variety of bakery goods in her narrow place that is specious in determination and will. And as God helps those who help themselves, Haven for Humanity team reached her to provide her with the needed requirement to develop her project in order to move out from that small place into a more spacious bakery in which all the necessary equipment to improve her products and market and sell them to the largest number of customers are available. Tammy now, has a good start to continue her career, and we have the sincere promise in Tawakkol Karman Foundation to continue where the human is.

In Mahlyia ... Students Dream of Studying Under a Safe Roof

The war was able to disrupt many aspects of life in Yemen, but it didn’t break the determination of young and old aged Yemenis. Mahliya is one of the directorates of Ma’rib province where 229 male and female students in Al-Thawra school are resisting the unfair conditions in which they found themselves as a result of the corruption of the previous dictatorial regime, wars and current crises. Students go to study under dilapidated ceilings and in classrooms that were built from timber and tree trunks with a huge shortage in all requirement and capabilities. The students’ determination to continue their education under this threatening and insecure environment was a great motivation for Haven for Humanity program to be there through building new fully-equipped classrooms that accommodated the students to continue their education.
Tawakkol Karman Foundation believes that education is the essence of development and with this vision it will continue its work.

Eng. Anisa … Yes, I Can

Passion is the secret behind surpassing all challenges, no matter how difficult they are. Anisa Al Salami, an engineer in maintenance and electronics, her passion led her to become a proficient in a field of work that was restricted to men. Her university study wasn’t enough for her, so she revived her talent with self-study and serious practice and started working from a small corner in her house for free until she was able to gain the confidence of the community. she dreamed about a project that would enable her to become a pioneer amongst women in the field of technology, and it was achieved through the program of Haven for Humanity that provided her with everything she needed to establish a maintenance center that provides assemble and maintenance services for different electronic devices.

Between Pavement and School

Our story is about a displaced person who lost his job and left his house and land in #Al_Mahwit province and moved into Taiz city due to the war waged by the Houthi militia. Muthanna, the father burdened with responsibilities, the persevering diligent volunteer teacher, and the tired seller who kept smiling despite all burdens and difficult requirements of life.  He dreamed of a small project to earn an income and provide for his family, so the program of Haven for Humanity stood by this dream and established a shop to sell nuts for him, and with eyes filled with tears of joy, he said, “Finally, I saw my name on the shop!” Small development enterprises for vulnerable and fragile groups are one the means that Tawakkol Karman Foundation uses to promote development in countries affected by wars and conflicts.

Water Reaches al-Safha Village

More than 500 people in al-Safha village, Juba district, Ma’rib province are suffering from the scarcity of clean and drinkable water. The children and youth of the village are forced to make a tiring daily trip to fetch water from far away areas. The water carried by cars barely reaches the village due to the rough roads, and mostly it isn’t suitable for drinking so they should go to another area to get the water. Haven for Humanity program witnessed this tragedy and connected the village to the main water project in cooperation with inhabitants, so the inhabitants can finally have a rest. Tawakkol Karman Foundation promotes development through community engagement and supports humans wherever they are.

A’hed … A Struggle with One Foot

A’hed Al-Baruti, an injury of war who lost his leg during confrontations with Houthi militias in Taiz. During his trip to receive treatment he got abducted by the Houthis for a year. Then, his mother was able to release him after paying a ransom that she collected from doers of good. As he is the sole breadwinner for his mother and siblings he didn’t surrender to the tough conditions and with strong will he started to sell potatoes and sandwiches on a carriage and at night he slept in an old water tank as the money he earned wasn’t enough to cover the expenses of transportation to get back to his home that is located in one of the far outskirts of the city. The team of Haven for Humanity program found A’hid and learned about his conditions and made a difference in his life as it helped him in establishing a café to sell drinks and light meals. A’hid expressed his thrill about this project saying: This day is my day. Economic empowerment is one of the main goals of Tawakkol Karman Foundation to promote development and peace building.

Rescue from the Well

When water becomes a silent killer instead of being the source of life. This is the situation in Ma’lama village in Al Azariq district of #Al_Dhale’ province where the state and basic services are absent so women carry the burden of bringing water from the well of the village which leads many girls to drop out of school to fulfill this task although the water isn’t drinkable as the well is left open which made it a good place to foster bacteria that cause diseases, but it is the only choice to get the water for the 450 people living there. All of that made the program of Haven for Humanity goes there to help. It rehabilitated the well and installed a solar powered pump to extract water into clean sanitized closed tanks so water can be taken easily from there. The Soft Keyboard Story... Three Girls and a Dream

In a community that imposes strict restrictions on women in all aspects of life, you can hardly find women who are able to continue studying after elementary school or go for work and for serving the community. However, bravery, strong will, the belief in rights and self-estimation push the wheel of change forward despite of all difficulties and obstacles. Fatima, Balqees, and Mariam are 3 ambitious girls from Tarim city, Hadramout province who decided to break the unfair social norms and studied design, photographing, and project management and they were dreaming of finding someone who can support their ideas through establishing one project for them together. The program of Haven for Humanity didn’t disappoint them and established a center for publicity and announcement for the three young women. This center will be an example to show women’s abilities. Ahlam came back to her mother’s house to live with her in Izkar village in Al Maafer district of Taiz province. When she came back, she found all the support she needed from her mother to overcome her crisis and continue her education until she became an agricultural engineer. Ahlam never stopped dreaming and working as she had a wild desire to plant and apply all of what she has learnt on practice to prove for people around her that development in any country can’t be achieved without women and without empowering them in all fields of work. Ahlam dreamt of a land and a farm, of a project from which she can benefit herself and others. As a result of her suffering, Ahlam became aware that she should engage other women, so another woman helped her in making the feasibility study for the farm project and her female friend helped her in planting the crops. As for teachers, they are facing a real difficulty in dealing with the students getting distracted due to the previously mentioned conditions and climate conditions as the climate in Nassab is desert climate; very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. The agony of women in Yemen is continuous as they pay the expense of war and bear the burden of customs, traditions, and communal and family violence. And the mere speaking about their agony might make them exposed to greater violence, as feeling pain is a crime and complaint is a crime too. In Crater district, Aden province, a shelter for battered women is located and it is one of the projects of the brave and great Yemeni Women Union in Aden. There, the stories of the hidden violence are revealed; the violence that was overlooked during peace and war times.
