Education for Development Program

  • Development disparities that divides the world into developed and developing countries are mainly attributed to education opportunities enjoyed by individuals at developed countries that enabled them to obtain their real chances in work and life.
    No doubt, provision of education chances to individuals is the only guarantee to remove these disparities at all levels, where a good education means a good job, a good production, a good income, and a good health leading all the way to a social welfare.
    We, at Tawakkol Karman Foundation, work for development and peace, therefore education is our first priority, where we will focus on the following:
    - Contribute to establishment of model education institutions for poor and deprived categories;
    - Contribute to develop current education systems to serve development and achieve labor markets’ goals and requirements;
    - Raise community awareness with the importance of education and its relation to development and to remove ideological barriers between school and community through linking education process with the local community and surrounding environment;
    - Assist poor households to enroll their children at education institutions;
    - Promote partnerships between local and international organizations to work together and achieve national goals and millennium development goals at education priority areas.
    Activities;
    - Establish education institutions and institutes, and training centers at poor and remote areas, that provide education services for all and in partnership with local communities;
    - Provide conditional and innovative financial and in-kind assistance to poor households to enroll their children at public education;
    - Launch lobbying and advocacy campaigns for education issues;
    - Training sessions, panel discussions, workshops, seminars and conferences to accomplish the program goals;
    - Provide scholarships (undergraduate, postgraduate, languages, trainings and rehabilitation) for students who face financial constrains deter them from continuing their education. Scholarships are provided on the basis of merit and competitiveness and according to predetermined nomination criteria;
  • Description of Activities:
    First; Establish education institutions and institutes, and training centers at poor and remote areas
    TKF will identify targeted areas and categories and prepare project proposals for certain centers and institutions, based on the existing reports, statistics, surveys or on that TKJF will conduct in the future.
    Second; Provide conditional and innovative financial and in-kind assistance tom poor households to enroll their children at public education; through;
    - Sponsoring students by finding donors who may provide financial assistance till their graduation from high school;
    - School Gift; (includes all children school needs);
    - enroll head of the household, or any family member capable of work, in training and rehabilitation programs to facilitate job opportunities;
    - Productive households projects.
  • Third; Launch lobbying and advocacy campaigns for education issues;
    These campaigns are organized to lobby among decision makers to solve education problems and to place education among state’s first priorities.
    Fourth; Training sessions, panel discussions, workshops, seminars and conferences to accomplish the program goals;
    These trainings will focus on all education process; teachers, students, curriculum, education environment and the household.
    Fifth; Provide scholarships (undergraduate, postgraduate, languages, trainings and rehabilitation) for students who face financial constrains prevent them completing their education. Scholarships are provided on the basis of merit and competitiveness and according to predetermined nomination criteria;
    TKF provide a number of annual scholarships to students in different courses of knowledge according to specific rules and procedures.
    Types of Scholarships:
    - Full scholarship including tuition fees and subsistence allowance;
    - Partial scholarship, covers only tuition fees, and may include travel tickets at specific instances. Other partial scholarship where students secure their seat in the university and TKF pays only a monthly subsistence allowance;
    - Domestic scholarships for those who cannot travel abroad.
    All these scholarship are provided on the basis of merit and competitiveness, and the following conditions are required for all full and partial scholarships;
    - Complete the application form that could be downloaded from TKF website and send it to the Foundation’s email;
    - Applicants for full scholarships shall be with outstanding academic record with 90% or more of score in high school certificate, and for partial scholarships a satisfactory percentage of not less than 85%;
    - Applicants should not be awarded another scholarship;
    - Priority will be given to students with difficult economic conditions;
    - Applicant shall pass interview, information and skills tests provided by TKF.
  • Procedure for Granting Scholarship:
    - TKF announces for the scholarships in its website and other media outlets;
    - The Foundation receives applications through the application forms uploaded at the website within dates specified in the announcement;
    - Applications will be sorted out according to the stipulated conditions for the scholarship;
    - Short list of preliminary nominees will be developed and contacted for interview and test;
    - According to the outcome of the interview and test, winners of the scholarship will be declared and notified.
  • Contractual measure between TKF and students awarded the scholarship:
    As for the partial scholarship, students will have to sign a commitment letter to the Foundation obliging them to report back their semester transcript, in order for the Foundation to follow-up their progress and provide assistance if encountered any challenges.
    As for full scholarship, a contract shall be signed between TKF and the student in which he/she commits to;
    - Provide TKF with the transcript of each semester, showing that he/she has passed with specified scores according to the university in which he/she is enrolled;
    - Failure of the student in any semester will result in denial of subsistence allowance for the next semester, then TKF will resume paying allowance thereafter, however failure in two consecutive semesters will disqualify the student from the financial scholarship;
    - Any change in the specialization/courses of study, shall be notified to the TKF by the concerned student;
    - Student awarded with scholarship shall commit to a voluntary work of 400 hours at TKF per year, throughout his scholarship years.
